Our Commitment to Sustainability by Design

by Deborah Donovan, SVP Environment, Health and Safety
Earth Day

Today we celebrate Earth Day, a global, annual celebration honoring the achievements of the environmental movement to date and raising awareness about what still needs to be done to safeguard the Earth’s natural resources.¹

At Moderna, we believe that human and planetary health are interconnected. As we relentlessly pursue our mission to deliver the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines, we must keep sustainability top of mind.

As part of our most recent ESG Report, we established our environmental sustainability strategy based on three pillars, which capture our commitment to grow the company in a way that protects and minimizes our impact on the environment. Among these pillars is a commitment to sustainability by design.²

Our new global headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was built with this principle top of mind. The building is designed to be the most sustainable commercial lab building in Cambridge, expected to eliminate most of the fossil fuel consumption for building heating, and includes features that promote occupant health and wellness, enabling Moderna to advance its strategic sustainability initiatives.

Targeting best-in-class energy performance, ~90% fossil fuel reduction, LEED Platinum, Fitwell Life Science, and Wired Score certifications, the space is equipped with features that were purpose-built for exceptional energy efficiency. A few examples include:

  • Ground-source and exhaust-source heat pumps to provide heating in the winter and cooling in the summer

  • Solar panels on the roof to supply electricity to the building

  • An atrium that maximizes daylight and increases occupant connectivity to the natural environment

  • Rainwater collection for use in the cooling system, as well as for irrigation

  • A high-performance exterior with triple glazed windows, reducing the demand for typical heating and cooling needs

As a Company working at the intersection of science, technology and health, we understand that the health of our planet is of great importance, and we are committed to doing our part to protect the environment and sustainably manage the planet’s natural resources as we build our commercial business, advance our science, and engage with our community… not just today, but every day.

Happy Earth Day!
