Questions & Answers with Anisa Gandhi

by Moderna

We caught up with our colleague Anisa Gandhi, who works at Moderna’s Technology Center, to hear her perspective on how values and culture drive workplace behavior.

Anisa talks collaboration, leading by example and what it means to build a culture of quality.

Name: Anisa Gandhi
Role: Associate Director, Quality Systems and Compliance
Years at Moderna: 3.5 years
Hometown: Quincy, MA

What exactly does your role entail?
I work in Quality Assurance (QA) compliance, where I help to ensure our manufacturing, testing and product distribution are compliant with regulatory and internal requirements.

How did you end up in this role?
After studying chemistry in school (and loving the lab), I worked for a pharma company testing raw materials and finished product and have been in industry ever since. Really great mentors believed I could do more than I thought I could—and that has landed me where I am now.

What drew you to Moderna originally?
All the companies I had worked for in the past made generic therapeutics. I wanted to try a company that was doing something different—Moderna was definitely outside my comfort zone!

What’s been your favorite part of working at Moderna?
As corny as it sounds, the brilliance of my peers. There’s nothing better than coming up with a solution to a problem by working together.

Where do you find inspiration?
Taking a drive while listening to music when I know all the words and can sing along (Fight Song by Rachel Platten or anything Queen) or listening to NPR (This American Life, Hidden Brain and The Moth).

What are your three favorite things to do on the weekend?
Sleeping in; taking walks with my dog, Auggie; getting take-out and watching movies with friends.

Which Moderna core value do you most embody — bold, collaborative, curious, relentless?
Collaborative, and maybe relentless (I never shy away from a good follow-up!).

How do company values and culture impact your work, especially Moderna’s focus on building a “culture of quality”?
Moderna’s Quality Culture is always at the forefront of my mind. I’m constantly thinking about how my own actions depict a “quality” mindset and how I can lead by example.

What does building a “culture of quality” mean to you?
Moderna has an excellent foundation for a strong Quality Culture—a great Quality System and strong, collaborative teams. Taking it to the next level means ensuring that all team members feel empowered to escalate potential issues or weaknesses in systems and procedures. This will allow for continuous improvement!

If you didn’t have this job, what would you be doing?
Driving across the U.S. and stopping to see road-side attractions in every state (largest ball of twine?!).

What are your hopes for our industry?
Revolutionize the way medicine is made and reach populations around the globe, including underdeveloped nations.

In addition to career growth and the opportunity to deliver on an important mission to advance the field of mRNA science and improve treatment options for patients, Moderna offers a unique values-based culture.

We are proud to be recognized by Science Careers as a top employer (2015-2019) and we’re always looking for smart, talented and passionate people like Anisa. Want to join the team? See all open positions and find out more about why it’s good to be at Moderna.
